AWS News at MWC – Nokia, GSMA Open API, ML Solutions for RAN, Logistics Facilities
Transforming Operations & Reducing Energy Consumption
Transforming Operations & Reducing Energy Consumption
A couple weeks ago, global research firm Omdia published a report that found that telcos can reduce opex/revenue ratios by more than 10% simply by moving workloads to the cloud. AWS is continuing to innovate with industry leaders to make building and operating networks faster, easier, and more energy efficient.
AWS and Nokia announced efforts to combine AWS’s reliable and secure infrastructure and cloud services with Nokia’s new In-Line Cloud RAN SmartNIC and Cloud Native RAN Software. The joint solution aims to solve three key challenges. First, it will reduce the complexity to integrate and deploy a disaggregated hardware and software product stack. Second, it will enable carrier-grade RAN performance with high radio density in a single server.
Third, it will simplify and accelerate the process to configure and continuously maintain the RAN solution after it’s deployed in the field. This builds on AWS and Nokia’s work together, which focuses on leveraging AWS to improve costs, reduce time-to-market, and accelerate innovation in telco network operations. The blog is here.
AWS, Aira, Juniper and VIAVI unveiled a new RAN Intelligent Control solution that uses machine learning to help mobile network operators reduce Radio Access Network (RAN) energy consumption. The RAN is the part of the network that connects individual devices to other parts of the network, which accounts for 75% of a telco’s energy consumption – and with rising volumes of data, that is only expected to grow. The solution will leverage Aira Technologies’ rApp, built and deployed on AWS, using machine learning algorithms to improve energy efficiency (up to 20% in initial simulations) and total cost of ownership. Innovating New Services to Monetize 5G Networks
The GSMA included AWS part of its announcement for a new a new industry-wide initiative called GSMA Open Gateway, a framework of universal network Application Programmable Interfaces (APIs), designed to provide universal access to operator networks for developers. GSMA Open Gateway APIs are defined, developed and published in CAMARA, the open source project for developers to access enhanced network capabilities. Together with cloud service providers such as AWS and CAMARA standards, APIs between telcos and developers can be delivered quickly, using developer-friendly tools and software code. The release is here.
Telia, a telecommunications company operating in the Nordics announced a new machine learning, video-recognition deployment with Transval, the Finnish market leader in outsourcing logistics and the largest intralogistics house in the Nordics. The new solution leverages video-recognition, private 5G networks and edge computing, which run on AWS, to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the logistics services provided by Transval, and eliminates the need for manual inventory counts and reconciliations. Telia built this leveraging new expertise from a company-wide upskilling initiative and collaboration with AWS. More information is found here. (Amazon: ra)
